Band matrix

In mathematics, particularly matrix theory, a band matrix is a sparse matrix whose non-zero entries are confined to a diagonal band, comprising the main diagonal and zero or more diagonals on either side.

Formally, consider an n×n matrix A=(a_i,j ). If all matrix elements are zero outside a diagonally bordered band whose range is determined by constants k₁ and k₂:

then the quantities k₁ and k₂ are called the lower and upper bandwidth, respectively. The bandwidth of the matrix is the maximum of k₁ and k₂; in other words, it is the number k such that if .

A matrix is called a band matrix or banded matrix if its bandwidth is reasonably small.

A band matrix with k₁ = k₂ = 0 is a diagonal matrix; a band matrix with k₁ = k₂ = 1 is a tridiagonal matrix; when k₁ = k₂ = 2 one has a pentadiagonal matrix and so on. If one puts k₁ = 0, k₂ = n−1, one obtains the definition of an upper triangular matrix; similarly, for k₁ = n−1, k₂ = 0 one obtains a lower triangular matrix.

Bandwidth (radio program)

Bandwidth was a Canadian radio program, which formerly aired on most CBC Radio One stations in Ontario on Saturday afternoons. The program, produced by CBO-FM in Ottawa, was broadcast in all Ontario markets except Toronto, where CBLA airs its own local production, Big City, Small World, in the same time slot. The program also formerly aired in Nunavut, where it was later replaced by The True North Concert Series.

Hosted by Meg Wilcox, the program was an arts and culture magazine which profiles the music scene in the province, including album reviews, interviews with musicians, and live concert performances. Amanda Putz was the program's original host, but took a sabbatical from 2006 to 2009 to work for Radio Television Hong Kong and CBC Radio 3. Later hosts included Alan Neal and Adam Saikaley.

The program's cancellation was announced in April 2014, as part of funding cuts to the CBC. Repeats continued to air in the program's old timeslot until the new program In the Key of C, hosted by Craig Norris from the network's studio in Kitchener, was launched in the fall.
